He paid a pool technician, Dick Calaway, to teach him the trade. Within three months, Rob knew pool systems inside out. But he needed more—so he buried himself in chemical engineering books, snuck into college chemistry classes, and began building a prototype. The problem? Every version kept melting the power supply. He spent years trying to create one that could survive.

Desperate for a solution, Rob made nearly 100 calls from the Yellow Pages until a NASA electrical engineer named Henry Richards answered. Just as he was walking out the door, Henry paused—and offered to help. Together, they built version after version, pushing through failure after failure until they finally developed a stable, working power supply.

Then, in an unexpected twist, Rob’s hairstylist had to stop working due to her mother’s illness. He asked if she could still cut his hair at her home, and she agreed.
